Saskatchewan Reserve Community - Community Theme Resources

Includes Cody's Community, Big Book and Little Book patterns. Cody tells us about his reserve community, his family, his Chief and his school.

Task Cards

Included are task card activities. They are:

Introduction

A Reserve Community is designed to supplement Saskatchewan Education's Grade Two Social Studies curriculum for classroom studies about the family and the community.

The nucleus of this unit is a story, Cody's Community. The story includes the concepts of identity, location, tradition, responsibility, transportation, occupation, community services and political structure.

Unit Objectives

Students will understand that:

  1. Other communities differ from our own.
  2. A reserve is a community of First Nation's families.
  3. A reserve provides services to its residents.
  4. A reserve has a political structure.
  5. Maps provide us with the location of Saskatchewan's reserves.
  6. Reserves have a history.
  7. Elders can tell us about the history of our community.
  8. Elders are the knowledge and wisdom of an Indian community.
  9. Each reserve community has its own language and traditions.

September 1, 2005 is the 100th anniversary of our province. It's time for children of all ages to celebrate Saskatchewan. Children are Celebrating Saskatchewan 2005, you'll find black line masters for poems, songs, rebus chants, activity sheets, student bookmaking, hands on centre activities, and a storyboard story. See the Bibliography and Resources to find Web sites for pictures of the Saskatchewan flag and other provincial emblems and to find a list of great storybooks by Saskatchewan authors.

Enlist the help of parents or older students to help you assemble the activities and storyboard story. They are easy to put together with the help of a photocopier and coloured cardstock.
