Rapunzel, Rapunzel! is a spin-off from the traditional fairytale. Before reading the Big Book version, students should be familiar with the traditional tale. For Kindergarten, you may want to tell the story orally, simplifying the storyline. Proceed with Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Students will use rhythm and rhyme in oral and written activities, will attempt and practice reading behaviours, will recognize the point of view of the story, will associate words and letters with sounds in a meaningful context, will recognize exclamation marks for placing emphasis, and understand purpose of the dialogue balloon and quotation marks. Strategies include reading to students, repeating repetitive patterns, and brainstorming. This Big Books lesson provides a teacher and student section with reading passages, big book, and little book assembly to create a well-rounded lesson plan.

This story in our resource was written in Lac La Ronge, SK in 1991 at a conference theme-building workshop. The co-authors have included Cree words in their dialect. The story is about a boy who looks for his fish. He sees all kinds of fish before he finds his pet. The story introduces Cree vocabulary of kinship words. The repetitive text provides encouragement and success for emerging readers. Themes involve families and pets. Included resources in our unit are patterns to make a big book, and patterns to make a flannelboard story. Students will learn kinship terms in another language or their mother language, will listen to a story, and will retell the story using pictures. This Big Books lesson provides a teacher and student section with reading passages, big book, and flannelboard to create a well-rounded lesson plan.
